What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body, such as the intestine, protrudes through a weakened area in the muscle or tissue wall that normally holds it in place. This can occur in various parts of the body, often the abdomen, groin or a previous incision site. While hernias are not always dangerous at first, they do not resolve on their own and may require medical attention to prevent complications.

Our specialists bring over 40 years of combined experience in treating all types of hernias. We help patients return to their daily lives with confidence, regardless of the case's complexity.

How Do You
Identify a Hernia?

Common signs of a hernia include a noticeable lump or bulge under the skin , which may become more pronounced when you stand, cough, or lift something heavy. Depending on the type and location of the hernia, you may also experience:
A feeling of pressure or heaviness in the affected area
Discomfort or a dull ache that worsens with activity
A burning or pulling sensation near the bulge
Pain that gradually intensifies over the course of the day
If a hernia becomes trapped or obstructed, it can cause severe pain, nausea, or vomiting. These are signs of a possible strangulated hernia and require urgent medical care.

Hernias don’t go away on their own and may even worsen over time.

Get an early diagnosis to avoid complications and explore your treatment options.

How Do You
Identify a Hernia?

The treatment approach depends on the type, size, and severity of the hernia. Some hernias can be monitored for a period, but most will eventually require surgical repair. Your doctor will help you decide on the best path forward based on your condition and lifestyle needs.
